May 5 Art Reception Features Local Watercolorist
March 31, 2009
A spring art reception will be held at Landis Homes, Lititz, PA, on May 5. The show will feature the first public exhibition of the watercolors of a local artist.
Ruth Hess Horning, of Denver, is a lifetime resident of Lancaster County. She was born in Elizabethtown and grew up on a farm in the Manheim area. She attended Chestnut Grove, a one-room school near her home. During her school and early working years she dabbled in tempera, oils and finally watercolor painting.
"I am kind of like Grandma Moses," says Ruth, who didn't give time to her artistic ability until she was 48 years old.
Once her family of six children was school age, Ruth began formal instruction with Lititz artist Al Taft, which lasted for several years. Ruth says her late husband Leonard Horning always encouraged her artistic pursuits. From 1985 to the present she continues to receive training from another Lititz artist, Fran Spangle. Ruth's work for this exhibit consists of portraits, scenery and florals.
The opening reception, to which the public is welcome, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, in the Harvest View lobby and galleries at Landis Homes, 1001 East Oregon Road, Lititz. The works will continue to be on display through July 2008. For more information, call Landis Homes at 717-581-3935
