Arlene’s Children Share Her Story About the Caring Fund – You’re Invited to Help

This year is extra special because it’s the 30th anniversary of the Caring Fund which has helped numerous residents pay for their care even after their personal finances were exhausted.

Arlene was one of those residents. Arlene grew up locally on a farm. She and her husband, Glenn, knew each other from growing up in the same church, social circles, and one-room school. They married and raised their children together while running a farm.

“Mother rarely stopped or sat down. She raised us children, helped in the fields, cooked three full meals a day, gardened, and still managed to keep the financial records for the farm, volunteer at church, and work at market throughout the years,” one of Arlene’s children said.

When Glenn’s health declined, it changed everything. They moved off the farm, and Arlene eventually became Glenn’s caregiver. They decided to move to Landis Homes in 2008. Glenn passed away in 2010, but Arlene stayed active, often volunteering to help on campus.

Eventually, Arlene had to move to a higher level of care due to changes in her own health.

“She was gracious about moving, but she was concerned about her finances. Even though her children contributed to her financial care, it wasn’t enough and she eventually began benefitting from the Caring Fund. We were grateful we could reassure her that she didn’t have to worry about finances. We were also grateful she continued to receive such good care up until she passed away in 2022,” her children shared.
