From Somalia to Lancaster County, PA – Mary’s Story & Your Invitation

Mary, a current resident at Landis Homes, shared her story. Through a rare opportunity, Mary was able to continue her education beyond eighth grade, and she took hold of it. She went on to graduate from college as a teacher. She felt called to teach English as a second language and she desired to serve, so Mary spent 20 years in Somalia teaching children. When she returned to the United States, she earned her Master’s degree in Education and continued to help children and refugee adults learn English. Her care and concern for her students and others continues today.

“My former pastor was a profound influence in my life, encouraging me to go into missions and praying for me. Living in another country also changed my perspective. I loved my students. It was difficult to adjust to living in the United States after my time overseas, but I gradually adjusted and found a community here. I always knew about Landis Homes from serving with Eastern Mennonite Missions, and I had a number of siblings here too. I’ve lived here over 20 years now. I did not expect to live this long and will be 102 soon! I have always appreciated the thought of helping others and dedicated my life to that, but I never expected to need help myself,” Mary shared.
